Ecuador Handicapped Travel

Ecuador Handicapped Travel

Ecuador offers some handicapped travel facilities… but as the note at that looks at Ecuador handicapped and Ecuador wheelchairs, shows… there are challenges for the handicapped in Ecuador.

I would like to comment on this having spent almost 30 years in the disability field in the US before moving to Ecuador. Nowhere in Ecuador is very handicapped friendly.  Some of the big cities are worst from what I see than the some of the smaller areas. The sidewalks in Quito are appalling for anyone with a disability. In Otavalo, which has recently put in brand new sidewalks and all in all is in much better condition than any of the larger cities, tried to put ramps in to cross the streets but the angle of incline is so steep that it would be virtually impossible for anyone utilizing a wheelchair for transport to, under his own power, make it up the incline.  Elevators are existent only in the much more expensive rentals. All and all, I think it would be extremely difficult to have any quality of life if you had to utilize a wheelchair for transport in Ecuador.  I have not been in every area of the country, but I have been to quite a few, and I have not seen anywhere that I would consider wheelchair friendly.”

Yet Ecuador handicapped situation is far from impossible and some companies such as offer Ecuador handicapped tours.  Their wheelchair tour page says:

“Our wheelchair tours have been carefully selected by our crew. For the last two years we have traveled with our guest to selected destinations, improving every time accessibility for our guest. Some destinations are more accessible than others, however we can assure that all of them are fairly accessible, and depending on our guest mobility some extra activities can be done in certain destinations. What you are about to see in our tours are the activities that could be done by any wheelchair user with mobility on the upper body.

We proudly present to you accessible destinations in each region of Ecuador (Highlands, Coast, Amazon and Galapagos), so feel free to choose whatever destinations that you will be mostly interested in visiting. We want to make your vacation one to remember, so please feel free to contact us for further information and remember that our tours have been designed focusing on safety and accessibility.”

Here is is an inspiring note about handicapped living in Ecuador.

Nate and Nancy Burger have been our friends for years,  an inspirational handicapped couple who have visited 58 countries and places including Russia,  Uganda and the Antarctic.

Here is a note form them: Hi, Gary. I have attached an article appropriate for the physically challenged in Ecuador. Best to you and Merri-     Nate

Living and Moving to South America

by Nate Burger

“For us, a physically challenged couple who speak essentially no Spanish,
the idea seemed foolish to our children and many of our friends.”

When I suggested the possibility of living in Ecuador, my wife’s eyes
flickered with just a hint of doubt. True, we had traveled in dozens of
countries and I had never gotten us into trouble before.  But then, we
had never done anything quite like what I was suggesting now.

Truth is, most North Americans have no idea of what Ecuador is all about
and what an absolute jewel it is for anyone who can learn to overcome
the obstacles it presents.

For us, a physically challenged couple who speak essentially no Spanish,
the idea seemed foolish to our children and many of our friends.
Everyone asked, simply, “Why Ecuador?” – that is, until we began to
explain our reasons for considering such a move.
